Today I am traveling internationally, and the US passport in my pocket does not have Donald Trump’s face on it. That will not be true much longer.
The State Department has finalized a redesign of the US passport featuring Donald Trump’s scowling second inaugural portrait, superimposed over the text of the Declaration of Independence, with his signature in gold beneath. It will be released this summer to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence — independence from a king.
At the Washington passport agency, it will be the default. Americans applying there will receive the Trump passport unless they go out of their way to avoid it.
It will be the first time a sitting president’s face has appeared in a US passport, but it will not be the only place.
His face is going on a new $1 coin, and his signature is going on US currency. His face is on the new National Park pass. His name is on the Kennedy Center, the US Institute of Peace, a prescription drug platform, a class of battleships, and a new investment account for children literally called the Trump Account.
Banners with his face hang from the Justice Department, the Department of Agriculture, and the Department of Labor. Across the river from the Lincoln Memorial, plans are underway for a 250-foot triumphal arch.
North Korea had a name for their ruler whose face appeared everywhere.
