Firing Squads

What they are describing is something else.

Note to my future self.

On Friday the Trump Justice Department announced it will execute federal prisoners by firing squad, something it has never done.

DOJ is also readopting pentobarbital, the lethal injection drug whose use the previous administration had paused after concluding it caused a sensation close to drowning.

In its release, DOJ claims these steps are “critical to deterring the most barbaric crimes, delivering justice for victims, and providing long-overdue closure to surviving loved ones.”

Three people currently sit on federal death row. In 15 months, the administration has authorized prosecutors to seek death sentences against forty-four more.

Meanwhile the DOJ also is directing the Bureau of Prisons to look at building an “execution facility to permit additional manners of execution.”

Finally, the DOJ has proposed changing rules to make clemency and habeas review more difficult.

It is 2026 and the federal government is preparing to build a killing facility.

And once you enter, it will be harder to leave alive.

DOJ says the goal is deterrence and closure.
